What’s New in Event Lighting for 2017

As event themes move away from rustic chic to whimsy, we’re seeing lighting following the trend with fun and lighthearted ways of brightening up the space. Today’s couples are always looking for what’s new and fresh, so here’s a rundown of what to expect from 2017 weddings.

Undertable lighting

Looking for a dramatic effect? Placing lanterns underneath tables creates a beautiful glow that will take on the color of the linen. This is a simple and cost-effective way to bring together an event’s lighting with its color palette. Note that this works best with simple linens like sheer, polyester, or organza and may not have the same effect with thicker options such as burlap or sequins. If lighting every table seems overwhelming, opt for the spots with heavy traffic—think the sweetheart table, the cake table, buffet tables, and the bar.

Getting creative with string lights

That’s right—LED string lights aren’t just for stringing across the dance floor! Couples are getting more creative with these versatile pieces by wrapping them around trees or columns, as well as weaving them into table runners. They can also be used to form outlines of shapes, which can create a breathtaking effect. Hula-hoops make for great hanging forms, whereas stars, hearts, or any other shape can be made by pinning lights to a wall.

Hanging lights

Hanging lights will never go out of fashion! Edison bulbs are still a popular choice, as are hanging candle vessels. Paper lanterns are definitely still in as well, but there has been a shift away from the bright and colorful fixtures in favor of simple white and ivory pieces. Hanging lights work well indoors and outdoors, so they can be easily incorporated into virtually any event.

Bigger is better

These days, couples want their lighting to be big and bold. This, of course, can be done in many different ways but popular choices on the scene are tall candelabra centerpieces, grand chandeliers, and large candle clusters. Of course, big displays aren’t for every couple but we’ll certainly be seeing more of these luxurious lighting designs.

As we get into the next year, keep an eye out for the lighting trends in the industry and look for ways into your clients’ events. They’ll love having the latest and greatest fashions for their special day!
